Feathered Bird Sensory Craft
This feathered bird sensory craft is a colorful five senses touch activity for preschoolers. Children first explore how soft craft feathers feel, then color a bird, cut it out, glue it onto a new background, and add bright feathers. It is an easy way to combine sensory language, creative art, fine motor practice, and bird learning in one playful project.

Materials
- Printed or hand-drawn bird outline
- Washable paint, crayons, or markers
- Colored construction paper
- Colorful craft feathers
- Child-safe scissors
- School glue
- Paintbrushes if using paint
- Tray or small container for feathers
- Smocks or table covering
How to Do the Activity
- Pass around a few craft feathers and invite children to touch them gently before beginning the art activity.
- Talk about how the feathers feel using words such as soft, fluffy, smooth, light, or tickly.
- Give each child a bird outline and invite them to paint or color the bird.
- Let the artwork dry if paint was used.
- Cut out the bird, or provide adult help with cutting when needed.
- Glue the cut-out bird onto a sheet of colored construction paper.
- Add small dots or lines of glue to the bird's body and press colorful craft feathers into place.
- Let the finished bird dry flat, then revisit the texture words and display the birds together.

- Is the feather soft, rough, smooth, light, or tickly?
- What colors do you see on your bird?
- Where do birds have feathers?
- Which kind of bird would you like to learn about?
Teacher Tip: Introduce the feathers as a touch invitation before bringing out the glue so children can focus on the sensory experience. This craft also works well during a bird study: show photos of different bird species, compare feather colors and shapes, and let children choose colors inspired by a real bird or invent their own. Supervise loose feathers closely and check for sensitivities before the activity.
