Recycled cardboard tube binoculars painted orange and yellow with a black yarn strap

Recycled Craft + Pretend Play

Cardboard Tube Binoculars

Age Group: 3-5 years old

This cardboard tube binoculars craft turns two recycled paper rolls into a playful tool for preschool observation and pretend play. Children paint the tubes, attach them together, add a yarn strap, and use their binoculars for nature walks, classroom scavenger hunts, or imaginative exploring.

Best for: Recycled crafts, nature themes, five senses, outdoor observation, classroom scavenger hunts, dramatic play, fine motor work, and color exploration.

Materials

  • Washable paint

  • Yarn or string
  • Hole punch
  • Scissors
  • Optional: stickers, markers, or washi tape

How to Do the Activity

  1. Give each child two cardboard tubes or paper rolls.
  2. Invite children to paint the tubes with their chosen colors and patterns.
  3. Let the paint dry before assembling the binoculars.
  4. Attach the two tubes side by side with glue, tape, or adult stapling.
  5. Punch one hole on the outside edge of each tube.
  6. Tie yarn or string through the holes to make a simple neck strap.
  7. Use the finished binoculars for a nature walk, classroom look-and-find game, or pretend explorer play.

Questions to Ask Children

  • What colors did you use on your binoculars?
  • What can you see when you look through them?
  • Can you find something round, tall, tiny, or colorful?
  • Where should we explore next?
  • How can we reuse other classroom materials?
Teacher Tip: Keep the yarn short enough for safe supervised play, or skip the strap and let children hold the binoculars with two hands. For a quick classroom version, pre-punch the holes and pre-cut the yarn before inviting children to paint and assemble.
