Five Senses Taste + Art

My Jam Jar Painting Craft

Age Group: 3-5 years old

This My Jam Jar painting craft is a cheerful five senses art activity for preschoolers. Children paint their own colorful jam inside a printable jar, mount it on bright paper, and finish the jar with a small ribbon bow. It is an easy way to bring creativity, fine motor practice, and taste vocabulary into a five senses theme.

Best for: Five senses themes, taste vocabulary, food themes, color exploration, painting, fine motor practice, and classroom art displays.

How to Do the Activity

  1. Print the My Jam Jar page on white cardstock or sturdy printer paper.
  2. Invite children to choose a jam color and paint inside the jar outline.
  3. Add brush marks, color mixing, or extra details to make each jar unique.
  4. Let the painted page dry completely.
  5. Cut out the jar, or prepare the cut shape ahead of time for younger children.
  6. Glue the jar onto a piece of colored construction paper.
  7. Tie a small ribbon or raffia bow and attach it near the jar lid.
  8. Display the finished jars together and talk about favorite jam flavors and tastes.

Questions to Ask Children

  • What color is your jam?
  • Do you think your jam would taste sweet or sour?
  • Which fruit could your jam be made from?
  • What happened when your paint colors mixed?
  • How does the ribbon change the way your jar looks?
Teacher Tip: Prepare the ribbon bows ahead of time if tying is difficult for your group. Children can focus on painting and color choices, then glue on a finished bow. Pair the craft with a simple sweet-and-sour discussion or a supervised taste test if appropriate for your classroom and allergy policies.
