Preschool paper plate kiwi craft painted green with a brown edge and black seeds

Fruit Theme + Paper Plate Craft

Paper Plate Kiwi Craft

Age Group: 3-5 years old

This paper plate kiwi craft is a bright fruit-themed art activity for preschoolers. Children paint a paper plate green, leave or add a light center, draw tiny black seeds, and color the outside edge brown to make a simple kiwi slice. It is an easy way to connect food vocabulary, color recognition, fine motor work, and playful fruit conversations.

Best for: Fruit themes, healthy eating units, color recognition, painting practice, fine motor work, seed counting, and classroom food displays.

Learning Goals

  • Fine motor skills
  • Color recognition
  • Creative expression
  • Fruit vocabulary
  • Counting and one-to-one correspondence
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Following multi-step directions

Materials

  • Paper plates
  • Green washable paint
  • Paintbrushes
  • Brown marker, brown paint, or brown crayon
  • Black marker
  • White paint or white paper circle, optional
  • Tray or table covering
  • Smocks or old shirts

How to Do the Activity

  1. Give each child a paper plate and invite them to paint the inside green like a kiwi slice.
  2. Leave the center of the plate white, or add a white paper circle or a little white paint in the middle.
  3. Let the green paint dry until the plate is ready for drawing details.
  4. Color or paint the outside edge of the plate brown to make the kiwi peel.
  5. Use a black marker to add tiny seed marks around the light center.
  6. Count some of the seeds together, compare short and long seed marks, and talk about the colors of a real kiwi.
  7. Display the finished kiwi slices together for a fruit theme, healthy eating board, or classroom art wall.

Questions to Ask Children

  • What colors do you see on a kiwi?
  • Where should the seeds go?
  • How many seed marks can you count?
  • Is the kiwi peel on the inside or the outside?
  • What other fruits could we make with a paper plate?
Teacher Tip: For younger preschoolers, draw a light circle in the middle before painting so they have a guide for the kiwi center. Older preschoolers can count seeds, make a seed pattern, or compare a real kiwi slice with their paper plate version.
