Preschool popsicle stick fries craft with yellow craft stick fries inside a red paper box

Pretend Food + Fine Motor Craft

Popsicle Stick Fries Craft

Age Group: 3-5 years old

This popsicle stick fries craft is a playful pretend-food activity for preschoolers. Children make a red paper fries box, paint craft sticks yellow, and place the painted sticks inside like French fries. It is a simple way to practice painting, gluing, hand-eye coordination, food vocabulary, and pretend restaurant play with easy classroom materials.

Best for: Food themes, restaurant dramatic play, community helper units, color recognition, painting practice, gluing, fine motor work, and pretend play centers.

Learning Goals

  • Fine motor skills
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Creative expression
  • Color recognition
  • Pretend play vocabulary
  • Following multi-step directions
  • Counting and sorting

Materials

  • Red construction paper
  • Popsicle sticks or craft sticks
  • Yellow washable paint
  • Paintbrushes
  • Glue or tape
  • Scissors for adult use
  • Black marker
  • Tray or table covering
  • Smocks or old shirts

How to Do the Activity

  1. Cut and shape red construction paper into a simple fries box. Fold the sides and glue or tape the edges so the box can hold the craft sticks.
  2. Invite children to paint popsicle sticks with yellow washable paint to make pretend fries.
  3. Let the painted sticks dry until they are ready to handle.
  4. Write Fries on the front of the red paper box with a black marker, or invite older children to copy the word.
  5. Place the yellow craft-stick fries inside the red paper box.
  6. Count the fries together, compare tall and short sticks, and use the finished craft for pretend restaurant or snack shop play.

Questions to Ask Children

  • What color are the fries?
  • How many fries are in your box?
  • Is your fries box full or empty?
  • What word is written on the front?
  • What else could we make for our pretend restaurant?
Teacher Tip: Prepare the red paper box shape ahead of time for younger preschoolers so they can focus on painting the sticks and placing them inside. Older preschoolers can help fold the paper, glue the sides, count the fries, or copy the word Fries on the front.
