Puffy paint ice cream craft with colorful shaving cream paint scoops and a paper cone

Sensory Art + Puffy Paint

Puffy Paint Ice Cream Craft

Age Group: 3-5 years old

This puffy paint ice cream craft is a soft, sensory art activity made with shaving cream and a few drops of paint. Children mix fluffy paint, spread it onto paper scoops, and build a sweet ice cream cone while exploring color, texture, and gentle hand movements.

Best for: Summer themes, ice cream themes, sensory art, color mixing, texture exploration, fine motor work, and process art.

Learning Goals

  • Sensory exploration
  • Fine motor skills
  • Creative expression
  • Color recognition
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Descriptive language

Materials

  • White shaving cream
  • Washable paint or food coloring
  • Small bowls or cups
  • Craft sticks or spoons for mixing
  • White paper or cardstock
  • Brown construction paper
  • Black marker
  • Glue
  • Scissors

How to Do the Activity

  1. Add shaving cream to small bowls or cups.
  2. Mix a few drops of washable paint or food coloring into each bowl to make puffy paint colors.
  3. Cut a cone shape from brown construction paper and draw simple waffle lines with a black marker.
  4. Glue the cone onto white paper or cardstock.
  5. Invite children to scoop, dab, or spread the puffy paint above the cone to make ice cream scoops.
  6. Add extra shapes, hearts, sprinkles, or details if desired.
  7. Let the artwork dry flat. The texture may soften as it dries, but the process is the best part.

Questions to Ask Children

  • How does the puffy paint feel?
  • What colors did you make?
  • Which scoop is the biggest?
  • What happens when two colors mix?
  • What flavor could your ice cream be?
Teacher Tip: For the brightest, cleanest colors, start with plain white shaving cream and add just a few drops of paint at a time. If your shaving cream already has a tint, the colors may look softer or more blended, which can still create a lovely pastel effect.
