Colorful preschool shark paintings displayed on white paper

Ocean Theme + Process Art

Shark Process Art

Age Group: 3-5 years old

This shark process art activity is a colorful way to explore ocean animals, paint, and creative expression. Children use a simple shark outline as an invitation, then choose their own colors, brush strokes, and textures to make each shark look unique.

Best for: Ocean themes, shark week, color mixing, painting practice, fine motor skills, vocabulary building, and open-ended classroom art.

Learning Goals

  • Creative expression
  • Fine motor skills
  • Color recognition and color mixing
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Ocean animal vocabulary
  • Confidence making independent art choices

Materials

  • Shark outline pages
  • Tempera paint or washable paint
  • Paintbrushes or sponge brushes
  • Black marker, if drawing outlines by hand
  • White paper
  • Paint trays or paper plates
  • Smocks and table covering

How to Do the Activity

  1. Prepare shark outlines on white paper or invite children to help trace a simple shark shape.
  2. Set out a few paint colors in small trays.
  3. Invite children to choose colors for their shark and begin painting inside or around the outline.
  4. Encourage different brush strokes, dabs, swirls, and color mixing.
  5. Let children add extra marks, lines, or texture with a brush or marker.
  6. Place the artwork flat to dry.
  7. Display the sharks together for a bright ocean-themed classroom gallery.

Questions to Ask Children

  • What colors did you choose for your shark?
  • What happens when two colors mix together?
  • Is your shark swimming fast or slow?
  • Where would your shark live in the ocean?
  • How is your shark different from your friend's shark?
Teacher Tip: Keep the focus on the process, not matching a sample. Offer the shark outline as a starting point, then let children decide how much paint, color mixing, and texture they want to add.
